NHL Home Openers: How Often Does the Home Team Win Its First Game?
Twenty seasons of NHL home openers show a small edge for the home side over its rating, a livelier scoreline, and a striking result for home underdogs.

- How do NHL teams do in their first home game of the season compared with later home games, against the rated probability and the total?

Does the home opener deserve its reputation? The banners, the anthem and the full building make a good story, but I wanted to know whether the first home game of the season plays differently from the rest. I checked 587 home openers from 2005-06 to 2024-25 against later home games, against a public Elo rating and against the 5.5 goals line.
The short answer is yes, a little. Home teams won 57.9% of their openers, against 54.6% across all home games, and they beat their rated probability while later home games fell short of theirs. Openers also produced more goals. These are the numbers I fold into my NHL predictions page when October comes round.
Window 1Home openers beat their rating while later games fall short
Each row pairs the average pre-game Elo home win probability with the share of games the home side actually won. In the opener the rating said 56.7% and the home team won 57.9%, a gap of +1.2 points. From home game 6 onward the picture flips: rated at 56.8%, the home side won only 54.5% across 20,912 games.
Home games 2-5 behave like the rest of the season, with 54.3% won against a rated 56.8%. The bump is confined to the first night in the building, so I don't treat it as an early-season effect in general.
Rated = average pre-game Elo home win probability.
View the data: home win %: rated vs actual
| Rated | Home team won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home opener (587 games) | 56.7% | 57.9% | ยฑ4 |
| Home games 2-5 (2,441 games) | 56.8% | 54.3% | ยฑ2 |
| Home game 6 onward (20,912 games) | 56.8% | 54.5% | ยฑ0.7 |
My one real caveat sits in that opener row. There are only about 30 openers a season, so its 95% range is ยฑ4.0 points, wide enough to swallow the whole gap. I read this as a lean in the right direction, not a proven edge.
Window 2Home underdogs in openers outperform their rating sharply
Splitting openers by who was favoured shows where the surplus comes from. Home favourites won 59.3% against a rated 58.9%, a gap of only +0.4. Home underdogs won 51.5% against a rated 46.1%, a gap of +5.4, which means a rated underdog won more often than it lost.
Later in the season both groups underperform. From home game 6, favourites sit at โ2.2 and underdogs at โ2.4. That contrast is the most interesting thing in this study.
| Home side | Games | Rated | Won | Gap (pts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home favourite | 486 | 58.9% | 59.3% | +0.4 |
| Home underdog | 101 | 46.1% | 51.5% | +5.4 |
| Home favourite (game 6+) | 16,305 | 60.2% | 58.0% | โ2.2 |
| Home underdog (game 6+) | 4,607 | 44.8% | 42.4% | โ2.4 |
The catch is size: just 101 underdog openers. A handful of results either way would move that rate noticeably, so I treat it as a reason to look harder at an outsider's price on opening night rather than an automatic play.
Window 3Openers clear 5.5 goals more often than later home games
The bars show the share of games with six or more total goals. Home openers went over 5.5 goals 53.2% of the time, against 49.9% in home games 2-5 and 49.7% from home game 6. League opening day is higher again at 57.6%, though that comes from only 92 games.
Goal averages tell the same story: 6.14 per opener against 5.82 from home game 6 onward. My reading is that systems, penalty kills and goaltending timing are still rough in the first week, and that suits the over.
View the data: over 5.5 goals rate by home game number
| Share of games with 6+ total goals | |
|---|---|
| Home opener | 53.2% |
| Home games 2-5 | 49.9% |
| Home game 6 onward | 49.7% |
| League opening day | 57.6% |
Remember that a shootout winner is credited with one extra goal in the official score, so a tight game that reaches a shootout can tip a total. That matters for the next chart.
Window 4Fewer ties and more two-goal wins on opening night
The heatmap lays out the full profile side by side. Openers were tied after 60 minutes 21.3% of the time, against 22.1% in games 2-5 and 23.1% from home game 6. Home teams won by two or more goals 34.6% of the time in openers, against 31.5% later.
Put together, openers are slightly more decisive and slightly higher scoring. Fewer games are decided by overtime or the shootout, and more home wins come with a cushion, which is consistent with the stronger home record above.

| Home win | Tied after 60 | Over 5.5 | Home win by 2+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home opener | 57.9% | 21.3% | 53.2% | 34.6% |
| Home games 2-5 | 54.3% | 22.1% | 49.9% | 31.4% |
| Home game 6 onward | 54.5% | 23.1% | 49.7% | 31.5% |
One more limit: some teams open on the road, so a "home opener" is not always game 1 of the season. The effect is about the first night at home, whatever the schedule did before it.
Best window
- Respect the opener crowd
Home sides won 57.9% of openers against a rated 56.7%, while later home games trailed their rating. Don't fade a home team on opening night just because the price looks short.
- Check home underdogs closely
Opener underdogs won 51.5% against a rated 46.1% in 101 games. A small sample, but enough to make me compare the price with the rating before passing.
- Lean over in week one
Openers went over 5.5 goals 53.2% of the time and league opening day 57.6%, both above the 49.7% from home game 6. The over is my default starting point on these nights.
