Do Better MLB Teams Win More Late in the Season? Win % by Month
The stronger MLB side underperforms its season record in spring and outperforms it in the run-in. The home edge moves too, but less than you might think.

- Question
- Does the stronger MLB team, and the home team, win more often in some months of the season than others, compared with what season records predict?
- Sample
- MLB regular season 2000-2025 excluding the shortened 2020 season; 60,730 games
- better-record team win rate, all months56.4%
- better team in March/April55.3%
- better team in September/October58.4%
- home win rate, all games53.7%
Does the calendar change how often the better MLB team wins? I took every regular-season game from 2000 to 2025, leaving out the shortened 2020 season, and compared each month's results with what the two teams' season records predicted. Across 59,545 games between sides with different records, the better team won 56.4%, a fair price of โ129.
The headline is a slow tilt across the year. The better team is slightly short of expectation in March/April and clearly ahead of it in September/October. If you use my baseball predictions page through the season, this is the background drift I keep in mind. Strength reads as a little weaker in spring and a little stronger in the final weeks.
Window 1The better team trails its record early and overtakes late
Each row pairs the expected win rate with the actual one. Expected comes from the two teams' records in their other games that season, plus the usual home edge. From March/April through July the actual dot sits just left of the expected dot. The better team won 55.3% in March/April, 55.6% in May, 55.3% in June and 55.9% in July, a touch below the model each time.
Then the picture turns. August comes in at 57.7% and September/October at 58.4%, against an expected 56.5% in the final window. That is +1.9 points, with a 95% range of ยฑ0.9. The spring shortfall of โ1.0 points sits right on the edge of its own range of ยฑ1.0. I treat the late-season gain as the firmer of the two findings.
View the data: better-record team: expected vs actual win %
| Expected | Actual | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar/Apr (9,307 games) | 56.3% | 55.3% | ยฑ1 |
| May (10,262 games) | 56.2% | 55.6% | ยฑ1 |
| Jun (9,852 games) | 56.3% | 55.3% | ยฑ1 |
| Jul (9,438 games) | 56.4% | 55.9% | ยฑ1 |
| Aug (10,336 games) | 56.3% | 57.7% | ยฑ1 |
| Sep/Oct (10,350 games) | 56.5% | 58.4% | ยฑ0.9 |
My reading is that good teams keep pressing late while weaker sides call up prospects, rest veterans and lose interest once they are out of contention. Spring is closer to a coin-flip version of baseball, with rotations still settling.
Window 2Home teams peak in July and dip in spring
Home sides won 53.7% of all 60,730 games. The monthly spread is narrow. The low is 52.9% in March/April, across 9,496 games with a range of ยฑ1.0 points, and the high is 54.6% in July.
For a bettor this matters less than the strength trend. The home edge does not grow into September the way the better team's edge does. Whatever drives the late-season gap, it is not simply home field getting stronger.

Window 3Late-season edge is strongest for good teams travelling
This chart splits the better team's gap by venue. In March/April a better team at home ran โ1.7 points against expectation, while on the road it was only โ0.3. Early in the year, the strong side playing at home is the version that disappoints most.
By September/October both bars point the same way: +1.6 at home and +2.3 on the road. July shows the opposite split, with +0.1 at home and โ1.1 away. These subgroups are thinner than the monthly totals, so I read the direction of each bar rather than its exact size.

| Better team at home | Better team on the road | |
|---|---|---|
| Mar/Apr | โ1.7% | โ0.3% |
| May | 0.0% | โ1.2% |
| Jun | โ1.0% | โ0.9% |
| Jul | +0.1% | โ1.1% |
| Aug | +0.9% | +1.9% |
| Sep/Oct | +1.6% | +2.3% |
The road number in the run-in interests me most. A strong team visiting a side that is playing out the string beats its record more than any other combination in this file.
Window 4Fair prices drift from โ124 to โ140
The table turns each month's win rate into a fair moneyline with no margin. The better team is worth about โ124 in March/April and June, climbs to โ136 in August and reaches โ140 in September/October. Over all months the actual win rate and the model line up almost exactly, at a gap of +0.1.
One caveat runs under everything here. These season records are only known in hindsight, so in April a bettor has seen far less of each team than this baseline has. There are also no market prices in the file, so expected means a strength model, not a betting line. A price that already reflects late-season motivation may have absorbed the whole effect.

Best window
- Discount spring favourites slightly
In March/April the better team won 55.3% against 56.3% expected. I give a little less weight to early records, especially for strong sides at home, who ran โ1.7 points.
- Lean stronger in the run-in
From August onward the better team beat expectation, by +1.9 points in September/October. Check whether the price has moved toward the fair โ140 before backing it.
- Don't overrate home field
The home win rate only ranged from 52.9% to 54.6% across months. Starting pitching and motivation matter more than venue when I adjust for the calendar.
