IPL Afternoon vs Evening Games: Chasing, Totals and Toss Calls
Across 865 T20 league double-header days, the evening slot changes toss behaviour far more than results. The IPL afternoon game is the one that breaks from the pattern.

- Question
- On T20 league double-header days, does the early (afternoon) game play differently from the late (evening) game for chasing, totals and toss decisions?
- Sample
- Men's T20 franchise leagues (IPL, BBL, T20 Blast, PSL, CPL, BPL, Super Smash, SA20, ILT20, MLC, LPL), 2008-2026 โ days with exactly two games in one league

- Chasing side won, early game53.8%
- Chasing side won, late game53.2%
- Toss winner bowled first, late game68.8%
Double-header days are a fixture quirk most bettors treat as background noise. Two games, same league, same day, and the assumption is that the evening match is a different beast because of dew, lights and a fresher pitch. I wanted to see whether the slot itself moves chasing rates, totals and toss calls, or whether it mostly moves captains' habits.
The short answer: across all leagues the chasing side won 53.8% of early games and 53.2% of late games, so almost no difference. What changes is behaviour. Toss winners bowled first in 68.8% of late games, and that preference doesn't translate into extra wins. The interesting splits sit inside individual leagues, the IPL afternoon game above all. If you want the match-by-match reads, my daily cricket picks page is where they live. This piece is about the calendar.
Window 1Captains field first far more often in the late game
This chart sets the early and late games side by side across 849 decided early games and 847 decided late ones. The chase win rates are nearly level. The toss decision is where the slot shows up: toss winners chose to bowl first in 61.8% of early games and 68.8% of late games, which is a clear lean towards chasing under lights.
That lean isn't paying off much. The toss winner won 51.2% of early games and 51.6% of late games, barely better than a coin flip in either slot. The one result that does shift is the favourite: rating favourites won 53.5% early and 56.7% late, so the evening game has been slightly kinder to the stronger side.
Early games: 849; late games: 847 decided matches.

| All leagues: chase win %, toss winner fields first %, favourite win % | |
|---|---|
| Chasing side won โ early | 53.8% |
| Chasing side won โ late | 53.2% |
| Toss winner bowled first โ early | 61.8% |
| Toss winner bowled first โ late | 68.8% |
| Rating favourite won โ early | 53.5% |

For a bettor, I'd stop treating the toss result as information in itself. Captains act on the evening-dew story, but the outcomes say the story is mostly priced into their decision, not into the result.
Window 2The IPL afternoon game has favoured the chasing side
The league split is where folklore runs into trouble. In the IPL the chasing side won 57.3% of 293 afternoon games and 51.0% of 286 evening games, with a stated range of ยฑ5.8 points. That runs against the usual line that dew makes the night game the chasing one. In this data, the afternoon slot has been the better one for the team batting second.
Other leagues go their own way. The PSL late game stands out, with chasers winning 68.4% against 58.2% early, from 79 games in each slot. The CPL also tilts towards the late chase, 55.1% against 46.8%, while the BPL looks more like the IPL at 54.3% early and 51.0% late.
View the data: chasing side win % by slot and league
| Early game | Late game | |
|---|---|---|
| IPL (293 / 286 games) | 57.3% | 51.0% |
| BPL (199 / 198 games) | 54.3% | 51.0% |
| BBL (84 / 87 games) | 48.8% | 48.3% |
| CPL (77 / 78 games) | 46.8% | 55.1% |
| PSL (79 / 79 games) | 58.2% | 68.4% |
| LPL (46 / 48 games) | 43.5% | 47.9% |
My main caveat sits here. Slot is taken from fixture order, not a recorded start time, and most league samples are small enough that some of these gaps could shrink with more seasons. I read the IPL afternoon edge as a lean worth checking against conditions, not a rule.
Window 3First-innings totals barely move between slots in most leagues
Totals are where I expected the evening to pull away, and overall it didn't. Full-length first innings averaged 163.7 early and 164.3 late. In the IPL the gap is negligible, 168.7 in the afternoon against 167.6 in the evening, so a line-setter has little reason to shade an IPL total by slot.
The bigger swings are league-specific and pull in both directions. BPL late-game first innings averaged 159.7, +4.8 on the early game, and the BBL late game sits +5.1 higher. The PSL and LPL go the other way, with late averages โ6.9 and โ9.8 below their early games, both from fewer than 80 innings per slot.
| League | Early inns | Early avg | Late inns | Late avg | Late โ early |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPL | 284 | 168.7 | 290 | 167.6 | โ1.1 |
| BPL | 199 | 154.9 | 199 | 159.7 | +4.8 |
| BBL | 76 | 164.1 | 83 | 169.1 | +5.1 |
| CPL | 70 | 157.3 | 73 | 156.2 | โ1.2 |
| PSL | 77 | 168.5 | 76 | 161.6 | โ6.9 |
| LPL | 46 | 171.4 | 43 | 161.6 | โ9.8 |
Those last two are the kind of numbers I'd note and then distrust until a few more seasons confirm them.
Window 4The 180 mark is reached about equally often in each slot
For anyone betting on big first innings, the slot hardly matters across the whole data. 30.0% of early-game first innings reached 180, against 31.5% in the late game. That sits comfortably inside normal variation for samples of this size.
So if a market prices the evening game as a run-fest by default, the record doesn't support it. Pitch, ground and the batting line-ups will tell you far more about a 180-plus first innings than the clock will.

| Under 180 | 180 or more | |

Best window
- Back the IPL afternoon chase
The chasing side won 57.3% of IPL afternoon double-header games against 51.0% in the evening. Treat it as a lean to confirm with conditions, given the ยฑ5.8 point range.
- Ignore the toss as a signal
Toss winners bowled first in 68.8% of late games but won only 51.6% of them. The toss result alone shouldn't move your price.
- Don't inflate evening totals
First innings averaged 163.7 early and 164.3 late across all leagues, and 180-plus came up 30.0% versus 31.5%. Adjust totals by league and ground, not by slot.
Questions bettors ask
Do chasing teams win more often in IPL evening games?
Not in this data. The chasing side won 51.0% of IPL evening double-header games, compared with 57.3% of afternoon games.
Should I bowl first if I win the toss in a night T20 game?
Captains mostly do. Toss winners bowled first in 68.8% of late games, but the toss winner won just 51.6% of those matches, so the choice has added little.
Are T20 totals higher in the second game of a double-header?
Only marginally overall. First innings averaged 164.3 in late games against 163.7 in early games, though the BPL late game ran +4.8 higher.
